Richly stained woods, natural stone, and potted succulents give a warm, rustic tone to this contemporary great room retreat. Millwork is lavish wrapping itself floor-to-ceiling around two sides and incorporating art niches, storage, a built-in computer desk, and wide-screen television. The distressed wood’s many knots and visual imperfections create a comfortable contrast to sophisticated use of crown molding and glass inserts.

Above, the pseudo barn roof is inset with pot lights and dramatic ceiling paper in a stylized brocade pattern. In one corner, a rock fireplace and hearth are framed by symmetric bookshelves and wood columns. Greenery sprawls casually across the mantel with errant tendrils cascading over the edge as if descending down a mountain slope.

As ready for entertaining as for the joys of daily living, the kitchen area draws inspiration from the wood and stone of its adjoining space. Cabinets are of the same wood but are interspersed with stone backsplash, painted wall, and sunny window. Highlighted with ceiling paper, an arched valance above the sink creates an effortless visual flow between the great room’s two distinct areas. And to provide a touch of fun-loving sassiness, two wrought iron chairs are pulled up at the eating bar just in time for a quick get-me-on-the-go snack.
